trailer analysis
DAWN OF THE DEAD
The first shot which is shown in the trailer is a birds eye view, this shows the isolation of the character walking into the hospital. This foreshadows the rest of the film and what is to come. In the same shot the American flag is being looked down upon revealing the vulnerability of the country. The next few shots also foreshadow the apocalypse due to come (e.g. patients with bites being admitted into the hospital). The cut back to the character's home makes the viewer feel at ease because of the homely environment. A close up of the door opening reveals a silhouette in the corridor, teasing the viewer at what is about to happen. Next is a rapid succession of shots showing the panic and confusion of the situation to the viewer. When the main character leaves the house a wide shot is used to show the surrounding area and the chaos occurring. Titles then appear amidst the reveal of an important location (the mall). The rest of the trailer contains a wide variety of shots within a montage which shows the pure anarchy of the film 'e.g. scenes with explosions, cars, guns, zombies being killed/killing). From watching this trailer we can apply the concept of mystery to what the cause of the chaos is.
IT
The initial opening shot is of a boy creating a paper boat for his brother, it is in a home environment and is therefore seen as safe, however the next shots consisting of the younger brother leaving the house into the rain alone foreshadows the next scenes. A point of view shot is used from the perspective of the child as the clown appears in the sewers, to then cut back to see the reaction of the child's face. A crescendo is used within the music to build up tension before the face of the clown appears. The following shots are in place to set the scenery and storyline of the film. Wide angles are often used throughout to show the entire cast of actors that are the children, this familiarises the audience with them and creates an emotional attachment. The final shot is fast paced and uses jump cuts to show the intense disorientation o the situation. We will use the idea of starting in a safe environment such as a household at the start of our trailer.
The snowman
The first shot is an extreme wide angle showing a woman walking alone in a car park, this instantly shows to the viewer the isolated situation she is in and that there is no help available if anything were to go wrong. A bird's eye view shot is used to establish the general location in a winter/snowy environment afterwards. A short montage of close ups shows the killer preparing a tool to kill the victim while concealing the killer's identity with high angles and the use of the shadows of the killer's clothes. Point of view shots are used to show what the police officer is looking at showing the audience the messages left by the killer. Midway through the trailer a close up of a cigarette assumed to be held by the killer is put out, this represents the life that he is about to take. Another montage is used to show some of the investigation of more deaths as well as location changes. In relation to out trailer we will be using a montage of shots that involve confusing scenarios and murders that are carried out by the main character.
